Formulated by Dr Karen Becker, an integrative and functional medicine veterinarian and one of the most-followed voices in pet health worldwide. She's the author of two New York Times bestselling books on pet health, with decades of focus on root-cause, whole-body healing, an approach that aligns closely with how we think about feeding and healing dogs here at The Healthy Hound.

Her formulas address the underlying reasons pets struggle with gut health, not just the symptoms. This one is made in a GMP-certified facility and third-party tested for purity.

Dr Becker's products are sold through her brand Proactive Paws, and we're thrilled to be bringing this one into New Zealand for the first time. Currently, you can only buy this in New Zealand through The Healthy Hound.

A three-strain system, not a single-strain formula

Primitive Probiotics is built specifically for the canine gut, not adapted from a human formula. It's made up of three separate strain groups, working together rather than relying on one type of bacteria to do all the work:

  • Ancestral strains, sourced from wild wolf populations. These are the original microbial allies dogs evolved alongside, long before domestication.
  • Species-specific strains, sourced from healthy domestic dogs. Adapted to modern life, processed diets, indoor living, and everyday stress, and known to colonise well in a dog's gut.
  • Soil-based organisms, naturally hardy spore-forming strains. Their resilience means more of them survive the trip through stomach acid to actually reach the gut and do their job.

Delivers 1 billion CFU per serving, a meaningfully higher dose than many products on the market.

What's actually in it

  • One strain produces a natural antimicrobial compound, supporting a more balanced gut environment.
  • Another is one of the most widely studied probiotic strains in the world, often included for its role in immune modulation and gut barrier support.
  • A yeast-based strain is commonly recommended alongside antibiotic use, since it's less likely to be affected by antibiotics the way bacterial strains can be.
  • A GABA-producing strain is included as well. GABA is a natural calming compound the body produces, and this strain works through the gut-brain connection.

No added prebiotic fibre. This is deliberate:

  • Prebiotics can sometimes feed the wrong bacteria in dogs with SIBO or an already imbalanced gut.
  • The one inactive ingredient is organic pumpkin powder, used as a gentle whole-food carrier rather than an isolated fibre additive.
  • This makes the formula a more cautious choice for sensitive digestive systems.

    Worth considering if your dog:

    • Has loose stool, excessive gas, or inconsistent digestion
    • Is recovering from antibiotics, illness, or a stressful period
    • Is on regular flea, tick, or worming treatments, which can disrupt the gut microbiome even when necessary
    • Has seasonal itch or general skin sensitivity linked to immune balance
    • Is a senior needing extra digestive and immune support
    • Is a puppy building a healthy gut microbiome from the start
    • Could use some extra support around anxiety or reactivity, alongside training and behavioural work, not instead of it

    A few things worth knowing

    • Can this go with enzymes? Yes. Enzymes improve how well food is broken down, probiotics support the microbial population that does the rest of the work.
    • Timing with antibiotics: give the probiotic at least four hours away from any antibiotic dose so both can do their job properly. If your dog has just finished a course, this is often a good time to start supporting the microbiome as it rebuilds.
    • Introducing to a sensitive dog: start with less than the standard dose and build up gradually over a week or two.

    • Made in a GMP-certified facility
    • Third-party tested for purity
    • Suitable for all life stages, from puppies to seniors
    • No fillers, artificial flavours, or synthetic additives

As always, if your dog has an existing medical condition, please check in with your vet before adding anything new.
